Shad: Celebrate the season in the Vila Franca de Xira

March is the month of the Shad in Vila Franca de Xira. Throughout the county, 27 restaurants feature a dish made with this fish river which is also an emblem of the region bathed by the Tagus river.

The gastronomic festival March, the Month of the Shad honors and remembers living in the old times linked to fishing and rural work, when the river took away the livelihood of many families, expressed now in an initiative that brings the various tables of the city the dish more emblematic served with the fish, in the spring, choose the Tagus river to spawn.

Shad fried with açoda roe is the delicacy served in these 27 spaces scattered throughout the county, amongst which is the restaurant Bica’s Slipper (Wide Spout of flip-flops, a 6, Vila Franca de Xira. Tel. 263 209 249) where you can also taste the Shad with arroz de cabidela (both cost €13,5 and serve, typically, two diners).

In addition to a table, the “March, the Month of the Shad” also marks its presence in the Markets of Vila Franca de Xira, Alverca and Alhandra, with Show-Cookings that promise to whet your appetite for the initiative.

Rides aboard the Boat Varino “Freedom” (with departures from the Marina of Parque das Nações), guided visits to Museums and to the Historical Centre of Vila Franca de Xira, portugal, are other proposals that complement the program of the gastronomic.
