The Presidential Train: high-level gastronomy on the banks of the Douro
There is something mystical in boarding a train. The Train Presidential turns that sensation on the best world experience in the form of a culinary trip through the banks of the river Douro. The next train part of Saturday, day 14, of the mythical Station of São Bento, to which he returns, 9 hours past.
The best public event in the world in 2017 is back on the Douro line to a journey that promises to be, once again, memorable. Aboard travel also some of the best and most famous chefs national. The Presidential Train happens at the end of the week, throughout the month of April (up to may 1, inclusive), and cycles through the tracks only, that require the senses awake to absorb one of the most beautiful landscapes vínicas of the world. The Douro shows through the windows but not only, since there is provision for a stop by an emblematic bastion of Dona Antónia Ferreirinha, Quinta do Vesuvio.
Built in 1890, originally served the court of king D. Luís I. later it was renamed the “Train the Presidential” and traveled up to be taken out of circulation in 1970. There are eight years that is on display at the National Railway Museum, in Entroncamento.
Inside, the carriages reflect the luxury and sophistication of one who serves royalty, heads of state, presidents and popes, his role during more than a century. After a careful restoration that, in 2010, you returned all the charm and refinement of yesteryear, retraces the railway line carrying some of the most interesting heads of national and their exquisite creations dining, or this was not a gourmet dining experience on the rails.

The best in the World

After having been recognized as the Best Public Event in the World in the past year, in the BEA Awards, highlighted by Forbes as one of the ’10 Best Train Luxury of the World’, and even dubbed by CNN as the “most tasty train journey in the world”, this year’s edition of The Presidential Train underlines again the creation of the national at the table, alternating the heads the highly regarded with new promises.
Next weekend, on 14 and 15 April, Vasco Coelho Santos, head of the restaurant, Euskalduna Studio, is at the controls of the kitchen. Then, on 21 and 22, João Rodrigues, Feitoria, assumes the direction dining options on this trip. António Galapito and Bruno Home, ‘rising stars’, they prepare the four-hand experience of scheduled trips for the 28th and 29th of April and the last dates of the event, 30 April and 1 may, have as chief guest, Henrique Sá Pessoa.
After this spring issue, the Presidential Train returned to the rails just in the fall.
The trip, which travels across the line of the Douro, departing and returning to the Sao Bento train Station, costs €500 per person.
