Winebar Home of the Widow: eat snacks between hundreds of wines
The narrow alleyways of Quintandona, Lagares, Penafiel, reveal a well-preserved village. Do not get tired to admire the houses of shale, recovered, and the flowers in the window. The pillory and the chapel centenary are witnesses of other times. In the middle of the rural environment that surrounds this place, also discover sites where amateur theatre, as the Home of the Xiné – Cultural Center. And still a beautiful surprise: the Winebar Home of the Widow, where they serve delicious snacks and fine wines.
In the summer, enjoy the terrace of the Winebar Home of the Widow – the old threshing floor -, near the garden. But it’s worth a walk through the building and discover its hidden corners. Outside, a small terrace, on the higher plane, only with a table secluded and a sun umbrella. Inside, a pleasant room, the bar and a staircase to two upper floors, woody and full of “identity”.
The former owner “was the widow very early and the house was known as the home of the widow” says the manager, Paulo Sousa. The old barn of the house, which dates back to the EIGHTEENTH century, opened five years ago as a wine bar: the height was smaller, but maintained “to the maximum” configuration and rusticity of the original. Has been restored, protecting the original design, the schist walls and the right foot bottom of the three floors.
In the beginning, were “only half a dozen references vínicas, some cheeses, cured meats and pataniscas”. The high demand has made the menu grow. “The wine, which has been the source of livelihood for many of the inhabitants” of the village, inspired the project. Are available between 300 and 350 references from all the regions – with the exception of the Algarve, many of them by the glass. The staff, trained sommelier, and help to harmonise them with the tapas and snacks. Highlight to the wide choice of sparkling wines and green wines of the region, as well as to the wines duriense and the “Home of the Gazalha”, a local producer.
There are mushrooms stuffed with bacon and cheese, eggs of quail with mayo, curry, sausage of black pork (€6,50), game sausage with scrambled eggs (€6), peixinhos da horta, egg scottish (à la coke wrapped in sausage), asparagus with walnuts, honey and cheese (€7,50), but also the nail of filet mignon in bolo do caco, tables of cheeses and stoners.
In the delicacies of fish, highlighted by the tentacles of the octopus with peppers (€22), and in the delicacies of the flesh, and the cheek or pork knee or the costeletão pig or a bullock. Finish with a sweet, such as chocolate mousse Oreo. Salads such as the smoked salmon and the canning, or a burrata with tomato salad cherry, may be sufficient to be pleased.
In addition to the pleasures of the Winebar Home of the Widow (rue de Quintandona, Lagares, Penafiel. Tel. 255753603), you should not miss, the days 14, 15 and 16 of September, the typical Party of the Broth, with street performers and, of course, the traditional soup from the village.
